Symbiosis – Meticulousness, 2023

Wang Yuyang (b. 1979, Harbin, Heilongjiang) lives and works in Beijing. He received a BFA from the Central Academy of Drama in 2004 and an MA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in 2008, where he has taught since 2008 and is now a professor. His interdisciplinary, transmedia practice explores the relationships between technology and art, nature and artificiality, and the material and immaterial. Spanning AI, genetic engineering, digital media, mechanical installation, painting, sculpture and moving image, his work uses programming, algorithmic generation and data visualization to create dynamic, interactive and often unpredictable forms. In 2022, he participated in Meta-Scape, the China Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale.

Statement

Between human, object and technology

Wang Yuyang begins from a skepticism toward the given ideas of reality, common sense and the standard. His working method reverses the usual relationship between artist and tool: software, machines, microorganisms and everyday things are no longer passive media, but participants with generative capacities of their own. Human, object and technology form networks in which knowledge and meaning are produced reciprocally.
