Adapted from the organizer's exhibition fileThe Moon was Wang Yuyang's first solo exhibition with Massimo De Carlo. Created for the Hong Kong space, its large-scale paintings reconsider Earth's only natural satellite between scientific record and psychedelic abstraction, extending the artist's interest in relations among humans, technology, Earth and space.
The moon has long been understood through monochrome photography, and this colourless presumption persisted after colour photography emerged. The artist observes its surface through video glasses transmitting a live monochrome image, choosing from paints whose names are concealed so that seeing and using become separate acts.
Only when the painting is complete does its rich random colour become visible. An image based on the actual lunar surface thus becomes an unforeseeable yet materially present coloured moon.
