Context
Picture and Character
The manuscripts of emotional painting are magnified into a large-size wall painting. Patches of different sizes, disordered pictures and abstract patterns resemble the two dimensional code that is commonly used in bar codes, traffic management and identification. Once we decode these randomly-created codes, this set of chaotic pictures start to have a concrete meaning. Character is image itself. (These paintings are made with reference to barcodes but without the information that barcodes carry. They are just abstract patterns. Using a barcode scanner, I extract information from these patterns, forming nonsensical phrases, and display them alongside the barcodes, which are enlarged printed as wallpaper. The phrases seem to be poetic and have meaning just as the barcodes appear to carry useful information. The words and the images become interchangeable.)
