Exhibition introduction
Lorenzo BruniThe sixth project in Museo Novecento’s Duel cycle was the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in Europe. Works occupied three distinct rooms, including a Renaissance chapel, using light, images and perceptual error to establish a rhythm.
The title Fireflies for Lanterns points to misrecognition. Paintings, moving tubes and coloured moons do not simply prove truth or falsehood; they bring different systems of knowledge into dialogue and produce new cognition as viewpoints shift.

A white painting is photographed under a specific light and printed back onto the canvas, making studio light a permanent part of the surface.
A painted tube glows while waiting for its dark ground to fade, placing the image within an ongoing process of natural light.
Tubes equipped with motors and microcomputers move across the floor, producing entanglement, isolation, pushing and uncontrolled new relations.
Squared Moon
2018
A rotating white tube first forms moon-like light; at a critical speed it appears instead as a suspended square.
The artist paints the moon with randomly chosen colours while seeing in monochrome, encountering the result only when finished.

AThe smallest room holds rolling, movable light tubes, while a rotating light sits on the chapel altar. The remaining room allows quiet contemplation; together the three establish the exhibition’s rhythm.
QWhat is the subject of the apparently monochrome 2 in 1 paintings?
AThe subject is light. A white abstract painting is made with thick strokes, illuminated and photographed, then the photograph is printed back onto the painting. Painting and photography create a new reality while preserving the light recognized in the studio.
QWhat does the misrecognition in the exhibition title mean?
AIt is better understood as misunderstanding or re-cognition. The same idea faced from another angle produces a distinct perception, so perceptual experience is both subject and medium.
