Foreword to A Painting

Wu Mo and Kang Li

The exhibition first presents the origin of “a painting,” then its result—detached brushstrokes spread across the wall. A still-life setting and process video in the darker space restore the making, overturning the traditional definition through origin, result and process.

The work does not emphasize technological novelty, but the artistry of obsolete technique, destructive aesthetics and material waste, using humour and fictional spectacle to examine body, experience and cognition.

Masking fluid separates each layer of brushwork. Once complete, the strokes are peeled from the canvas and dispersed through the room, turning a two-dimensional figurative painting into a three-dimensional abstract space while the canvas returns to blankness.

Paint, canvas, easel, brushes, chair, vase, porcelain bottle, lily and cloth; dimensions variable
