Wang Yuyang: The Marvelous Clouds
Sun DongdongThe exhibition begins with A Painting—Landscape: brushstrokes dispersed in space no longer reproduce nature but dismantle oil painting as a man-made medium. This farewell and declaration became a starting point for Wang’s thinking about humans, nature and artificial things.
The title comes from John Durham Peters’s media theory. The exhibition brings together flat works made after Wang’s deconstruction of painting: the former whole is broken into elements and reassembled across photography, digital language, artificial intelligence and handwork.

Brushstrokes are peeled from a landscape painting and dispersed through the gallery, replacing representation of nature with the materiality of paint.
A photographed light source is printed back onto a white abstract painting, creating an optical trick in which gallery light and pictured light do not match.
An ultraviolet tube printed on black slowly disappears under natural UV light, turning the image from a result into a fading beginning.
The artist paints the moon with randomly chosen colours while seeing in monochrome, opening a gap between scientific imagery and painterly perception.
Swaying Wisteria

A machine guides a charred branch to draw random lines, at once restaging the beginning of cave painting and proposing a new machinic inscription.
