Wang Yuyang: Painting
王郁洋:绘画
Foreword
Exhibition dossierWang Yuyang began with Chinese painting and realist oil painting before turning to theatre, performance, video and installation. After his 2015 Long Museum exhibition, he extended earlier ideas and entered a new phase of exploration from 2021 onward.
The exhibition takes painting as its thread, while painting repeatedly encounters photography, algorithms, artificial intelligence, microorganisms and machinic memory. Medium is no longer a passive tool but a participant in determining the image.

White impasto is lit and photographed, then digitally printed back onto the painting so that photography and painting, representation and abstraction, occupy the same surface.

An ultraviolet tube is printed on a black surface; natural light continues to consume the dark ground, making the image’s fate a gradual fading rather than a fixed completion.

Magnetized thermochromic paint forms changing boundary states under electromagnetic forces, translating invisible physical relations into an image.

Data visualization generates forms resembling microbial propagation—spectral entities extending through transparent layers like a petri dish.

A plant database is given to an AI to learn form, colour and texture, producing botanical images whose authenticity cannot be determined.

Text becomes binary code that controls modelling and painting software; machinic memory takes image form and is then fabricated as painting or sculpture.

Wearing video glasses that transmit only monochrome, the artist paints the moon with colours he cannot identify; the randomly coloured moon appears only when the glasses are removed.

Blue produced by microorganisms places painterly pigment, living process and synthetic biology on the same plane.
