Chaosmosis

Introduction
Zhang GaFrom the 2015 exhibition Tonight I Shall Meditate on That Which I Am to this mid-career survey, Wang Yuyang extends his investigation of multiple subjectivities across the geological, the microbial and everything in between.
Chaosmosis draws on Guattari’s term for the fluid interplay of order and disorder. Sculpture, installation, interaction and scenario juxtapose ancient ice, synthetic biology, artificial intelligence and robotic sleepwalking as different times and spaces emerge and dissolve.

Human and machine use one another’s results as the next starting point, establishing a new order through repeated exchange.

A light tube suspended at one end and touching the floor at the other walks through the gallery, its speed and angle governed by a magnetic carriage and random program.
LED screens continually display questions posed by an AI trained on diverse inquiries, reversing the machine’s role from respondent to interrogator.
A robotic arm paints inside a sealed glass room using the artist’s sleep EEG and eye-movement data, linking machinic and human consciousness across time zones.
